Quick answer

Start with the closed days, then choose an early hour. The palace has a weekly closing day, and it also shuts on 1 January and on the first day of each of the two Eid holidays. Visitors describe larger crowds later in the morning, and the tickets here are valid all day on the date you choose, so the hour is yours to pick. Winter hours are shorter, and last admission comes an hour before closing.

Check the closed days first

A visit fails most often on a closed day, so settle that before anything else. The National Palaces website lists a weekly closing day, which was Monday when this page was checked, and the palace also closes on some public and religious holidays. Those dates change from year to year, so check the website's calendar for the dates of your trip.

Pick an early hour

The palace opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, and last admission comes one hour before closing. Because the GetYourGuide tickets are valid all day on the date you choose, with no fixed entry slot, the hour is your decision. Visitors describe larger crowds later in the morning, and a reviewer of the Istanbul Tourist Pass ticket advises getting in early. An early start also gives you the afternoon for the waterfront, the mosque next door and a ferry.

Winter hours and summer hours

The GetYourGuide tickets note that from 1 November to 31 March the palace closes earlier than in the rest of the year, so a winter visit needs a morning start rather than an afternoon one. In the rest of the year the day is longer. Last admission is an hour before whichever closing time applies, and the visit takes a good part of a morning or an afternoon, so a late arrival in winter leaves little time. Check the hours for your date on the booking page and on the National Palaces website.

Holidays and the security line

Every visitor goes through a mandatory security check, which is separate from the ticket line. One GetYourGuide ticket notes that in high season the security line can take up to 30 minutes, and another that waits are longer at religious holidays. If your visit falls in a holiday week, arrive earlier than you would otherwise and keep the ID and the QR code to hand, so the check is the only thing you queue for.

Choosing the date for your ticket

Each ticket works on the date you pick, during opening hours, and the entry QR code arrives by email one day before or at once for same-day bookings. They are not open for any day; you choose one. Cancellation costs nothing up to 24 hours before on the tickets in this guide, so a date can be moved if the weather looks poor, but that has to happen the day before. Look at the closed days again when you pick it.

Combining the palace with the water

The palace sits on the shore, so a morning inside leaves the afternoon for the Bosphorus. Ferries leave from the Kabataş and Beşiktaş piers, and a sightseeing cruise gives the façade from the other side. The guide to the palace and the Bosphorus explains how to see the building from the water, and the cruise card on this site is a sightseeing sail that does not need to be booked for the same day.

Who this isn't for

Fixed entry times are not part of these tickets, which work all day. If your only free day is the weekly closing day, the palace cannot be visited then, and the guide to the Bosphorus is the better use of that day. And if you want a quiet visit at any price, remember that no timing removes the security check, which every visitor passes whether they arrive first or last.
